Business owners throughout the region are having a difficult time finding people to fill positions in some areas of the economy particularly in the retail, tourism and hospitality sectors. Director of the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce Carmen Schramm says business owners she has spoken with have reported difficulty in finding people of any age who are looking for part-time or seasonal employment. Schramm says it appears as though many people who are now entering the workforce simply do not have the same work ethic as people did in years past, making it more difficult to find good employees. There is a proposal on the fall general election ballot to raise the state’s minimum wage and Schramm says according to the business owners she has spoken with that appears not to be an issue with this manpower shortage that has occurred for several years now.
