McMaster Memorial

Plans are moving forward to create a memorial for South Dakota Governor William McMaster who served as governor in the early 1920’s and was a Yankton resident and banker.

Yankton County Historic Commission member Bernie Hunhoff says plans are to begin raising funds for the memorial project which is expected to cost about twenty-five hundred dollars.

Hunhoff says the commission is looking for ideas and financial support from the Yankton community for the project.

Hunhoff says as Governor of South Dakota McMaster is remembered as a friend of the farming community who fought to revise taxes and who waged a successful battle against oil monopolies and high gasoline prices.
