The Irene Cardinals rallied with two runs in the seventh to defeat Mount Vernon 6-5 last night in second round play at the Class B state amateur baseball tourney.  Ryne Lees pitched the complete-game victory for Irene and recorded 11 strikeouts.  In the opener last night, Larchwood eliminated the Freeman Black Sox by a 7-4 score.  Tonight in the second round at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, the Tabor Bluebirds will face Harrisburg at 5:30…followed by the Crofton Bluejays against the Dell Rapids Mudcats.

Mount Marty College has signed 5’11” forward Sarah Castenada from Bloomfield for their women’s basketball program.  Castenada was the leading scorer in girls basketball history at Bloomfield and she averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds a game during her senior season.

Mount Marty College has signed Jake Stidham from Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon for their baseball program.  Stidham is a 6’7” left-handed pitcher who had a 1.69 E-R-A last season and averaged over a strikeout per inning.  He plans to major in Business at Mount Marty.

U-S-A Softball has awarded a pair of Northern National tournaments to Yankton next year.  The 12-Under Class B and the 10-Under Class A Northern tournaments will be held in Yankton next year, likely at the end of July.  This will be the first time that these tourneys will be held in the state of South Dakota.

University of South Dakota pole vaulter Chris Nilsen finished 13th in the qualifying round for the World Track & Field Championships in London.  Nilsen just missed out on making Tuesday’s top-12 finals in the men’s pole vault, and he placed second among all American men in that event.

For the second consecutive game Sioux Falls outfielder Burt Reynolds had five consecutive hits, but last night it wasn’t enough as Winnipeg outscored the Canaries 9-7.  Also in American Association play, Cleburne nipped Sioux City 3-2 as LeVon Washington led the Explorers with three hits.
