Crofton has advanced in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament with a 6-1 victory last night over the Dell Rapids Mudcats. Cameron Kerkhove allowed just one run and four hits in eight innings for the Bluejays win, while Randy Tygeson led the attack with three hits and two runs scored. In the first game last night in Mitchell, Harrisburg shut out Tabor 6-0 as the Bluebirds left eight runners on base but could not score in the contest.
The Crofton Bluejays and Irene Cardinals are the two South Central League teams which have advanced to the Class B amateur baseball quarter-finals. The second round of action concludes tonight in Mitchell, as top-ranked Alexandria faces Canton at 5:30, followed by Madison against Four Corners.
Mount Marty College has signed two distance runners to attend school and compete for the Lancers. Dillon Ives is from Verdigre where he set the school record in the mile and he plans to run cross-country and track. Ives will major in Recreation Management and Tourism at Mount Marty. Quinn Luff is from Reliance and she will run cross-country for MMC. Luff placed in the top 13 at the South Dakota Class B state meet three times and she plans to major in Nursing.
Mount Marty also signed junior college transfer Donavan West-Vasaure for their baseball program. He is an infielder who batted .291 with 53 hits for the Reedley College squad in California this past season and he plans to major in Criminal Justice at Mount Marty.
The watch list of 42 F-C-S players for the College Football Performance Awards has been released. USD quarterback Chris Streveler is on the list after he accounted for nearly 28-hundred yards of total offense and 31 touchdowns last fall for the Coyotes. SDSU quarterback Taryn Christion and Jackrabbits wide receiver Jake Wieneke are also on that national watch list for awards.
