Mount Marty College has signed junior college transfer Gerardo Reyes, Junior for their baseball program.  Reyes is a 6’2” left-handed pitcher from Wenatchee Valley College in Washington where he threw 53 innings last year averaging a strikeout per inning.  As a high school senior in Warden, Washington he blasted 14 home runs and was named Second Team All-State.  He plans to major in Criminal Science at Mount Marty.

In the second round of the Class B amateur baseball tournament on Wednesday, top-ranked Alexandria whipped Canton 15-7 and then Madison ousted Four Corners 6-3.  Tonight in the Class B quarterfinals at 5:30 in Mitchell, Garretson faces Winner-Colome followed by the Irene Cardinals against Larchwood, Iowa.

In American Association baseball on Wednesday, Winnipeg edged the Sioux Falls Canaries 4-3 and Cleburne outscored the Sioux City Explorers 11-8.

There is a very close race in the bonus point standings heading into the final weeks of the Dakotas Golf Tour.  Doug Quinones of Sioux Falls has the lead with 1,366 points…Ohio golfer Tim Ailes was runner-up at the Hillcrest Pro-Am and he stands second with 1,310 points…and Sioux Falls pro Andre Metzger placed third at Hillcrest and he sits third with 1,267 points.  The three-day Pro-Am Jam is next on the Dakotas Tour, Friday through Sunday at the Country Club of Sioux Falls.

U-S-D graduate Brenna Lervick qualified in a tie for 38th at this week’s U-S Women’s Amateur at the San Diego Country Club, and yesterday the Chanhassen, Minnesota golfer lost to Lilia Vu 4 and 3 in the first round of the playoffs.  Lervick shot rounds of 77 and 71 to qualify for the nation’s top 64 match play.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association has released their pre-season poll of Division One college teams.  The Nebraska Cornhuskers reached the Final Four last season and are rated fifth in the national pre-season poll, while the Creighton Bluejays are ranked ninth in the nation.
