Irene was eliminated in the Class B quarter-finals of the state amateur baseball tournament last night as Larchwood, Iowa scored four runs in the first inning and rolled past the Cardinals 15-2. In the first game last night, Garretson edged Winner-Colome 6-5.
In the Class B quarter-finals tonight in Mitchell, the South Central League regular season champion Crofton Bluejays take on Harrisburg at 5:30, followed by Madison against top-ranked Alexandria.
In American Association baseball on Thursday, Sioux Falls blanked St. Paul 7-0 as Miles Nordegren pitched a two-hit shutout for the Canaries and Burt Reynolds belted a grand-slam home run in the victory. Sioux City downed Lincoln 5-3 as Cody Forsythe hurled seven innings and allowed just two runs in pitching the win for the Explorers.
The competitive season for Yankton High School sports begins tonight as the Bucks and Gazelles take on Sioux Falls Lincoln in soccer. Last year, the Bucks finished third in the Class Double-A state tournament and the Yankton boys varsity takes on the Patriots at 4:00, followed by the Gazelles varsity against Lincoln at 6 p-m. There will also be junior varsity games between the schools at the Lewis & Clark Soccer Complex just north of 31st Street.
The Summit League pre-season women’s soccer poll was released and Denver was the choice to win the league just ahead of three-time defending champion South Dakota State. The U-S-D Coyotes were picked in a tie with Omaha for fifth place in the pre-season soccer poll.
