Cardboard City a Yankton Success

Volunteers took to Memorial Park Friday night and slept in what shelter they could make for themselves as part of the 1st Cardboard City, an awareness and fundraising event supporting Pathways, Yankton’s emergency shelter and service provider for our community’s homeless.

Pathways Executive Director Jesse Bailey says while the event was focused on raising awareness, they were also able to raise much more money than anticipated.

Events Coordinator Sarah Swensen says she believes the participants are leaving in the morning with a much clearer understanding of homelessness in Yankton.

Swesnsen says this is the first time the organization has planned an event of this size.  She looks forward to seeing it grown for next year and now they begin preparations for their next event: the 2nd Annual Cabin Fever Games in February.
