The Yankton Gazelles volleyball team has a “Sweet 16” playoff match at Aberdeen Central tonight with the winner qualifying for the state tournament next week in Rapid City.  The Gazelles enter the playoffs with a 6 and 14 season record and they are seeded 13th in the field…while the Golden Eagles are seeded 4th with an overall mark of 15 and 5 this fall.  Our broadcast of Gazelles volleyball in the playoffs starts at 5:55 p-m on AM 1450, KYNT.

There are three South Dakota high school football championship games to be played in the DakotaDome in Vermillion today.  At 10:30 this morning there is a battle of unbeaten as Sully Buttes faces Colman-Egan for the Class 9-B title.  This afternoon at 1:30, third-seed Irene-Wakonda matches up with unbeaten Gregory for the Class 9-Double-A championship.  Tonight at 7:30 in the Dome, top-seed Corsica-Stickney faces Britton-Hecla for the 9-A crown.

Undefeated Hartington Cedar Catholic is the number-one seed in the Nebraska Class C-2 volleyball tournament starting today.  The Trojans will face Southern Valley at 3:30 in the opening round, while tonight at 7:30 seventh-seed Ponca takes on Nebraska Christian.

Hartington Cedar Catholic senior Cassidy Ulrich has committed to play golf for the University of Nebraska-Kearney.  Ulrich qualified for the Class C state girls golf meet the past three years and finished fourth last month, and she plans to major in business in college.

Yankton High School senior Maddy McClure has signed to run cross-country next year for the University of South Dakota and long-time Gazelles coach Dan Fitzsimmons.  McClure has placed in the top seven the past four years at the Class Double-A state meet for Yankton, and she plans to enter the education field.

Vermillion senior A-J Plitzuweit has committed to play men’s college basketball at Augustana University.  Plitzuweit was first-team all-state last year for the Tanagers and averaged nearly 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game.
