The second annual Battle of the Badges basketball game Sunday between the Yankton Police Department and the Yankton Fire Department/Emergency Medical Services was a great benefit for Yankton County Special Olympics.
Shari Duke works closely with the local Special Olympics and she says fundraising like this helps the athletes with many needs, including trips to statewide athletic competitions and new jerseys for the upcoming year. She had a big thank you for the Police/Fire/EMS personnel along with sponsorship from the Yankton community in this effort.
Funds were also raised during the event for the Avera Cancer organization, and the Yankton Police defeated the Fire/EMS squad for the second consecutive year to win the traveling trophy.
There was a special Celebrity Free Throw shooting contest during halftime, where Yankton Mayor Jake Hoffner edged Yankton School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Kindle 9-8 in the finals.
