The Yankton Bucks nearly pulled off a major basketball upset Saturday night in the Mike Miller Classic at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. Minneapolis De La Salle is the six-time defending state champion in Minnesota Class 3-A, and they edged the Bucks 61-57 in the title game of the Gary Munsen tournament as part of that Mike Miller Classic. Yankton freshman Matthew Mors had a huge game for the Bucks with 30 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots…while senior Jack Wolfgram sank 4 three-point baskets with 12 points. The Bucks are now 3 and 2 overall and will play at unbeaten Harrisburg Thursday night as part of a girls and boys doubleheader.
The Mount Marty men’s basketball team defeated Nebraska Christian College by an 80-69 score at the Cimpl Arena on Saturday. Lancer senior Marcus Mathieu tallied 22 points while senior Drew Cheskie chipped in 16 points as Mount Marty shot 52 percent from the field. Nebraska Christian had 11 victories and received 40 points on Saturday from D-J Hanes, the nation’s leading scorer at 33 points per contest. Mount Marty continues their season with a home G-PAC doubleheader Wednesday night against Northwestern College.
The USD women’s basketball team started their Summit League schedule with a 79-51 rout over Denver Saturday at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Sophomore Ciara Duffy had a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Coyotes moved their overall record to 9 and 5 this season, and USD will have a 5:00 game at North Dakota State this evening.
The USD men’s basketball team had a successful Summit League start with an 82-71 victory against Denver University. Four Coyotes scored in double figures led by junior Matt Mooney with 20 points as their record upped to 13 and 4.
