The Mount Marty men’s basketball team gave 11th-ranked Northwestern a battle to the end last night before the Red Raiders pulled away for an 87-73 victory at the Cimpl Arena. Northwestern shot 51 percent from the field, while senior Conlan Callahan led the Lancers with 23 points, including 5 three-point baskets. In the women’s contest, 18th-ranked Northwestern had a big third quarter and rolled past Mount Marty 79-52. Ali Kuca of Wagner hit 5 three-point baskets and paced the Lancers with 15 points. The Mount Marty teams will have a G-PAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Briar Cliff in the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City.
The U-S-D men’s basketball squad used strong defense to post a 62-50 win over Western Illinois last night at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center, holding the Leathernecks to just 32 percent field goal shooting. Matt Mooney led the Coyotes with 14 points while Trey Burch-Manning added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The South Dakota State men’s basketball team opened their Summit League schedule with an 87-80 victory at North Dakota State as Mike Daum led the Jacks with 37 points and 15 rebounds. The S-D-S-U women’s basketball squad whipped Omaha 89-64 in Summit League play as guard Madison Geebert had a season-high 25 points for the Jacks.
South Dakota State senior Kellen Soulek of Yankton has been selected to attend the College Gridiron Showcase and Symposium coming up January 6th through the 10th in Addison, Texas. The Showcase is the first All-Star event following the 2017 season, and provides exposure and education for top college football players from around the nation. U-S-D senior Alonge Brooks was also chosen for the Gridiron Showcase in Texas.
The Yankton Gazelles and Bucks continue their basketball seasons tonight with a doubleheader at Harrisburg. The Gazelles are 2 and 1 and have not played in nearly three weeks, while the Bucks are 3 and 2 overall as they face the unbeaten Tigers.
