Briar Cliff started with a 17-2 lead and cruised to a 66-54 women’s basketball victory over Mount Marty Saturday in the Tyson Events Center. The Lancers shot just 25 percent through the first three quarters and were led by 12 points from Ali Kuca and 11 points by Karlee McKinney.
In the men’s contest, Briar Cliff shot 53 percent in the first half and defeated Mount Marty 84-63 on Saturday in Sioux City. Senior Marcus Mathieu paced the Lancers with 23 points. Mount Marty College will continue their basketball seasons with a non-conference doubleheader at Dakota State Tuesday evening.
North Dakota State upset the University of South Dakota 84-79 Saturday in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Matt Mooney led the Coyotes with 23 points as they lost their first Summit League game after two victories.
The South Dakota State basketball teams both won Summit League games on Saturday. The S-D-S-U women defeated North Dakota State 83-63 and the Jackrabbit men picked up their fifth consecutive victory with a 101-88 win at Omaha.
Yankton totaled 129.7 and placed sixth out of 11 teams at the Brookings Invite gymnastics meet on Saturday. Sophomore Payton Steffensen returned to the Gazelles lineup and competed in two events, taking first in the floor exercise. Eighth-grader Alison Johnson took 13th place in the All-Around for Yankton.
Yankton finished 11th out of 19 teams at the Brandon Valley Wrestling Invitational on Saturday. Canton took the team title, Bon Homme-Scotland was seventh and Vermillion took tenth place. Carlos Ruffo won the 138-pound title for Yankton, with Gio Ruffo second at 120 pounds and Cole Diedrichsen third at 220 pounds. Josh Crownover was the 160-pound champion for Bon Homme, while Lucas Anglin got a second place for the Tanagers at 126 pounds.
