South East South Dakota SHRM Spring Conference

The risks that businesses run by not taking the issue of sexual harassment seriously could potentially result in the loss of millions of dollars from a lawsuit that could have been avoided.

Tyler Coverdale attorney with the Sioux Falls based firm of Woods, Fuller, Shultz & Smith says the award of one-point-two million dollars to a former agent of South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation from her lawsuit claiming she was retaliated against for reporting sexual harassment shows how serious the issue is.

Coverdale says training on sexual harassment is the first step for employers in avoiding such legal actions, but that training must involve the entire staff and not just certain employees.

Coverdale spoke at yesterday’s South East South Dakota Society of Human Resource Management Spring Conference hosted by Mount Marty College.
