The University of South Dakota men’s basketball team has a home game against North Texas this evening in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational. The Coyotes are 26 and 8 overall and were runner-up in the Summit League, while North Texas is 15 and 17 and placed seventh in Conference-USA. Tickets are available at the door this evening for the 7:00 game in Vermillion.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches has named two Division One men’s basketball players from this state to the All-District 12 first team. Junior Mike Daum led South Dakota State with nearly 24 points and 11 rebounds per game, while junior Matt Mooney from South Dakota led the Coyotes at 19 points a game and finished 20th in the nation with 67 steals.
U-S-D placed sixth in women’s golf in the Bradley Spring Break Invitational in Texas. Senior Abby Dufrane led the Coyotes with a 227 total for fifth place.
Dakota Wesleyan won their first national championship with rolling past top-seed Concordia 82-59 last night in the title game of the N-A-I-A Division Two Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. The Tigers were led by 26 points from Kynedi Cheeseman, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Jason Christensen of Dakota Wesleyan was named the Coach of the Year as they ended up 32 and 6 overall, while Concordia finished at 36 and 2.
