LOCAL SPORTS WRAP 10-5-21

  • The latest South Dakota High School Football media poll has been released. The Yankton Bucks remain fourth in the Class 11AA poll after their 45-rout of Mitchell. Brookings remains in third, Pierre in second, and Tea Area remains atop the polls for the fourth straight week. Other area teams have made some movements in this weeks polls. Vermillion jumped into the top five in Class 11A, securing the fourth spot after a 33-28 victory over Dell Rapids. Gayville-Volin moved up one spot from #3 to #2 in the Class 9B poll after a 57-22 scoring party over Centerville. The full media poll can be found under the local sports tab on our website.
  • Yankton Girls Tennis swung right into action yesterday for the opening day of the 2021 Class A State Championships in Sioux Falls, and the Gazelles are looking to bring home some hardware. Four of the six singles flights have a Gazelle in the championship semis in the final day of the tournament this afternoon. Maggie Schaefer in flight one, Nora Krajewski in flight two, Sabrina Krajewski in flight three, and Paige Mitzel in the sixth flight. The Gazelles hold the higher seed in three of the four semis, with only #6 Paige Mitzel fighting an uphill battle on paper, as she faces off against #2 Allison Hill of Rapid City Christian. Championship semis begin today at 8am at both McKennan and Kuehn Park in Sioux Falls. The Gazelles have two of three doubles flights in the championship semifinals today as well. As a team the Gazelles are currently sitting 3rd in the team standings with 254.5 total points. RC Christian is in 2nd with 266, and Mitchell is on top with 300 points.                      
  • The Bucks golf team teed off their two-day journey towards a state title yesterday in Huron, host site for this years Class AA State Golf Championship. After day one of two, Yankton sits in 6th out of 14 teams with a 323 (+35) score, and Sioux Falls Lincoln leads all teams with a 302 (+14) score. The top golfer for Yankton is Easton Vellek who carded a 77 (+5), and the top golfer overall after day one is Watertown’s Jake Olson who carded a 70 (-2). The meet continues today at 9am and concludes late this afternoon.
  • Win or go home, its playoff time for the Yankton Gazelles and Bucks Soccer programs, beginning today! The (4-7-2) Gazelles are the 13th seed and travel west to take on 4th seed (9-2-1) Rapid City Stevens today at 4pm MT. The 3rd seeded (11-1-1) Bucks will stay home at Crane-Youngworth Field, playing host to 14th seeded (4-8-1) Brookings Bobcats. You can catch the action LIVE tonight on KYNT and KYNTV with play-by-play man Josh Boelter. Pregame 630/opening kick at 7pm.
  • Three other Yankton varsity squads are in action today. The Competitive Dance & Cheer Teams compete in the Brandon Valle Invite beginning at 5pm, and the Gazelles Volleyball squad travel to the Corn Palace in Mitchell for an ESD Conference Matchup.
  • The first of two rounds of the GPAC Women’s Golf Championships completed last night and Mount Marty is tied for 5th place. Individually, Kelsey Heath tied for 10th after the first round with an 83. The second round will be played today at the Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion.
