- Yankton Girls Tennis finished 3rd in the Class A State Meet in Sioux Falls, finishing with a 406.5 score. Mitchell took the team title with a 499.5 score. Yankton took two singles titles, with Nora & Sabrina Krajewski finishing on top of their singles flights. Maggie Schaefer and Paige Mitzel each fought hard, but fell short in their flights final matchup. In doubles play, Yankton fell short in the finals to Rapid City Christian in flight #1. After excellent varsity careers, the Gazelles say goodbye to three seniors, graduating Maggie Schaefer, Virginia Paige, and Kayla Marsh.
- The Bucks golf team finished 6th in the final day of the Class AA Boys Golf State Tournament in Huron yesterday. The Bucks finished with a 641 (+65) score, while Sioux Falls O’Gorman won the AA State Title by carding a 604. O’Gorman won on a playoff vs Sioux Falls Lincoln that reached the 2nd hole. Individually Jake Olson of Watertown took the singles title, carding a 142 (-2). For the Bucks, 8th grader Easton Vellek finished tied for 19th tallying a 158 (+14) score. The Bucks graduate two seniors on the team, Jace Tramp and Caeden Ekroth.
- Yesterday was the 1st round of the Class AA Boy’s and Girl’s Soccer playoffs, and both the Bucks and Gazelles games ended with 3-0 scores, but only the Bucks advanced to the quarterfinals. The 13th seeded Gazelles fell short to 4th seeded Rapid City Stevens on the road 3-0 to end their season, while the 3rd seeded Bucks surged late in the second half to score three unanswered goals in their matchup vs 14th seeded Brookings at Crane-Youngworth Field. The first goal came off a penalty kick from a player returning from an injury plagued season, Lance Dannenbring. The Bucks would score twice more, securing goals from both Braylen Bietz and Ethan Yasat (Yah-Set). The Bucks now host 11th seeded Rapid City Central this Saturday for a 6pm start at Crane-Youngworth Field. The Gazelles season ends with a 4-8-2 record, and eight seniors have played their last high school soccer after an exceptional senior season, those seniors are Ashlyn Vogt (Vote), Callie Boomsma, Makiya (Ma-kye-uh) Ray, Cora Schurman, Kate Beeman, Madisyn Bietz (Beats), Abbigail Schmidt, and Talia (Tall-ee-uh) Olson.
- The Gazelles Volleyball Squad shucked any doubt of the teams steady improvement last night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, popping the Kernels in five sets 22-25; 25-21; 21-25; 25-18; 15-11. This is the second ESD victory for the Gazelles this season, improving their overall record to 6-10 overall. The Gazelles look to carry the momentum into Friday and Saturday for the two-day East-West Tournament in Watertown, facing 5 opponents total.
- The Competitive Dance & Cheer Teams competed in the Brandon Valley Invitational last night. The Cheer team secured 15th out of 19 teams with a 171.5 score, while O’Gorman won the event with a 268 total. The Yankton Dance Team finished 8th with a 252.25 mark, while host Brandon Valley took top honors, notching a 286.00 score. The Yankton Cheer & Dance team now will now travel to Mitchell for the Kernels Invite on Saturday, beginning at 10am.
- The Yankton Quarterback Club will meet today at noon at JoDeans, located on Broadway in Yankton. This week’s speakers are University of South Dakota track and field coaches Lucky Huber, Dan Fitzsimmons, A.G. Kruger and Derek Miles. If he is available, Olympic silver medalist Chris Nilsen will also appear. The public is invited to attend.
- The fall rounds of the GPAC Women’s Golf Championships are complete from The Bluffs in Vermillion, South Dakota. Mount Marty finished 6th in the two-day tournament with a final team score of 690. Kelsey Heath scored in the top 10 of individual competitors, finishing 8th with a score of 168. The final 36 holes will be played in the spring at the Norfolk Country Club in Norfolk, Nebraska.
- Mount Marty Soccer hits the road today for a double-header matchup with Dordt University. The men’s soccer team holds a 3-4-1 record, while the women have a 1-8 overall record. The women will play first with the first kick at 6pm.
