LOCAL SPORTS REPORT 2-17-22

  • The (5-11) Gazelles Basketball squad turns their attention towards top 25 Class A team, Tea Area Titans tonight at the Summit Activities Center, playing the first game of a Gazelles/Bucks Double-header. The (9-7) Bucks are coming off a two-game sweep of Rapid City public schools over this past weekend and are looking to secure a victory over the Tea Area boy’s squad, which is #4 in Class A. You can catch all the action live on KYNT and KYNTV with Bryce Ladwig. Pregame begins at 530pm, tipoff at 6pm.
  • South Dakota men’s and women’s swimming and diving team had a productive first day of competition inside Hulbert Aquatic Center yesterday during the Summit League Championships. All four relays contested, two for men and women, earned All-Summit League honors on opening day while the men’s 200 medley relay team set a new school standard in the event. Today’s day two action begins with prelims at 10 a.m. while the finals are at 6 p.m.
  • Crofton Girls Basketball hosts Ponca in a rematch of the C2-5 Subdistrict Finals tonight, winner will move on to the district play-in-game for their chance at a state tournament berth. You can listen to the action live on Riverfront Sports Station 94.3FM with Scott Ulrich. Pregame 645pm, tipoff at 7.
  • In the D1-7 Subdistrict, Hartington-Cedar Catholic Girls Basketball looks to dispatch Osmond from the subdistrict final tomorrow night. The game is scheduled for 7pm.
  • Ashlyn Vogt spent the last couple of seasons guarding the net at Crane-Youngworth Field for the Gazelles soccer team, but is now committed to doing the same for the Presentation College Saints of Aberdeen. As of yesterday, Vogt signed on to continue her academic and athletic career with the Saints.
  • It was senior night in the Cimpl arena last night for the Mount Marty men’s basketball team as they hosted Doane University. The Lancer women took the floor first against the Tigers. The Lancers kept it close the entire way through until Doane pulled ahead late to take a 74-64 win. Next up for the Lancer women is a Saturday game with the College of Saint Mary. This will be the final women’s game of the season and Senior night. Game at 2 p.m. pregame at 1:30. The Mount Marty men took the floor next. Doane got off to a fast start and never looked back. The Lancers fell 84-66 and finish the season with a 7-22 overall record, 3-16 in conference.
  • The Mount Marty Lancers baseball program kicked off their season on Tuesday in walk-off fashion. The Lancers opened their season against Waldorf University in a Tuesday double header, wining the fist matchup 5-0. However, Waldorf and Mount Marty were tied at 1 run a piece and went to extra innings in the second game. Then, senior All-American Billy Hancock hit a two-run home run in the eighth to win the game 3-1 for the Lancers and a 2-0 sweep for Mount Marty. Next up is a weekend series with Presentation College on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon each day.
  • This weekend, the Lancer indoor track and field programs will travel to Crete, Nebraska for the GPAC conference championships. This is not only the conference meet, but the final opportunity for the Lancer athletes to qualify for Nationals. Last time out at the Mount Marty Last Chance, the Lancers had 13 first place finishes.
