LOCAL SPORTS REPORT 4-13-22

  • Yankton Track & Field competed in a triangular in Mitchell yesterday, and took home five first place finishes. For the Gazelles, Annika Gordon took first in the Girls 400 Meter Dash with a (1:00.28), Sydnee Serck finished second (1:00.34). Shae Rumsey took first in the Girls 800 Meter Run with a (2:22.92). Tierney Faulk took the top spot in the Girls Long Jump (17-01.75). For the Bucks, the Boys 4×200 Meter Relay Team of Cody Oswald, Gavin Swanson, Brayden Boese (Baze), and Jaden Supergeci took first (1:33.01). Carson Haak took top billing in the Boys Discus Throw (142-06). Yankton ‘s next meet scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled due to weather.
  • South Dakota head men’s basketball coach Eric Peterson announced the addition of Brandon Ubel to his coaching staff Tuesday. Ubel (YOU-bell) played collegiate basketball at Nebraska, spent five years playing professional basketball overseas, and has been a part of former Coyote Head Coach Craig Smith’s staff for the last three seasons at Utah State.
  •  South Dakota sophomore Eerik Haamer and freshman Moe Bridgen have been named the Summit League Track and Field Athletes of the Week announced yesterday. Haamer is a pole vaulter out of Estonia. He garners his third career league field athlete of the week award. He captured the pole vault at the K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday with a vault of 18-0’ ½”. That height moved to seventh in the NCAA this spring and ranks him tops in the Summit. Bridgen, hailing from Jamaica, earns the Summit’s weekly award for the first time of her career. She took first in both the 400-meter hurdles and the 4×400-meter relay over the weekend in the same classic in Wichita. She crossed the finish line in 1:00.97 for the 400 hurdles, marking the second-straight week she’s clocked a minute flat in the event. The Coyotes return to action with three meets in California this weekend – the Mt. SAC Relays in Los Angeles, the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach and the Long Beach Invitational.
  • The YHS Boys Tennis Triangular originally scheduled for today with RC Central has been cancelled due to the forecasted cold and windy conditions and will NOT be made up. The next scheduled contest for the Bucks is Tuesday beginning at 11am.
  • The South Dakota State men’s golf team finished in seventh place at the Tiger Intercollegiate Tuesday. The Jackrabbits carded a 295 (+7) on the final 18 holes to remain in seventh, the same place the team sat after Monday’s rounds. The Jackrabbit women’s golf team held off the Stampede at the Creek Tournament field over the final 18 holes to take first place at the event yesterday. Four Jackrabbits finished in the top ten. The Jackrabbits had an eight-stroke lead over South Dakota following Monday’s 36 holes and maintained that advantage through the last round. This is the second first-place finish of the season for SDSU.
