LOCAL SPORTS REPORT 5-4-22

  • The Bucks and Gazelles combined for 20 first place finishes at the varsity track and field triangular in Mitchell versus the Kernels and Sioux Falls O’Gorman yesterday evening.

For the Gazelles:

  • Shae Rumsey took the 200 & 400-meter dash (27.04/58.58)
  • Annika (Ahn-ick-uh) Gordon finished on top in the 800-meter run (2:26.78)
  • Thea Chance took the 3200-meter run (12:44.00)
  • Tierney Faulk finished on top of the long jump (16-2) as well as the triple jump (34-11.5)
  • The 4×200 meter relay team consisting of Alexia Wheeler, Molly Savey, Annika Gordon, and Cora Schurman was victorious (1:50.80)
  • The 4×400 meter relay team consisting of Annika Gordon, Sydnee Serck, Claire Tereshinski and Shae Rumsey took top honors (4:06.41)

For the Bucks:

  • Austin Gobel finished first in the 400-meter dash (51.54), and first in the long jump (20-8.50).
  • Dylan Payer took the 800-meter run (2:04.75)
  • Timothy Merchen finished on top in the 1600-meter run (5:03.23)
  • Zach Fedde finished first in the 3200-meter run (10:10.20)
  • Cody Oswald took the 110-meter hurdles (16.23)
  • Carson Haak took first in both the discus throw (157-05) and shotput (50-03.50).

The following teams took first place in their respective matches…

  • The 4×100 meter relay team consisting of Jaden Supergeci (Super-Guess-E), Brayden Boese (Baze), Gavin Swanson and Austin Gobel (43.84).
  • The 4×200 meter relay team consisting of Cody Oswald, Gavin Fortner, Lance Payer, and Michael Mors (1:37.62).
  • The 4×400 meter relay team consisting of Dylan Payer, Nate Schoenfelder, Rugby Ryken and Austin Gobel (3:30.05)
  • The 4×800 meter relay team consisting of Even Payer, Antani Kabella, Abe Chance and Taylor Wenzlaff (9:35.18).
  • The 1600 sprint medley team consisting of Jaden Supergeci, Gavin Swanson, Rugby Ryken and Oliver Dooley (3:54.67).
  • Yankton junior Sydnee Serck has been selected for the Special Event 800 at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays, Friday in Sioux Falls. She will run out of lane two, and is currently ranked third in the 800 in South Dakota. In the 2021 South Dakota State Class AA Track and Field Championships she finished fourth in the 800, and helped the Gazelles to first in the 1600 relay and second in the 3200 relay.
  • Yankton Bucks Tennis split their varsity triangular yesterday, falling to Sioux Falls Lincoln 9-0 and defeating Sioux Falls Christian 8-1. In the victory, Gage Becker, Zach Briggs, Harrison Krajewski (Krass-key), Keaton list and Miles Krajewski (Krass-key) each earned singles victories. In doubles, the teams of Gage Becker/Zach Briggs, Ryan Schulte/Keaton List, and Harrison Krajewski/Dylan Ridgway all won their respective matchups. This was the final home competition for the 19-2 Bucks, as they set their sights on a varsity quadrangular Saturday at Brookings Hillcrest Tennis Courts vs Aberdeen, Huron and the Bobcats. First serve is set for 10am.
  • The annual Yankton High School Athletics Awards are being held at the Yankton High School Theatre tomorrow beginning at 630pm. It is open to the public, and free of charge. The Fine Arts Awards Program will be held on May 12th, and the Academic Awards on May 16th.
  • The South Dakota men’s golf team shot its best round of the Summit League Championships in the third and final round on Tuesday. The Coyotes shot a 294 as a team in the third round and jumped up one spot in the team standings for a seventh-place finish with a final score of 892. Junior Max Schmidtke paced the Coyotes with his third straight even-par score in day three and recorded a tie for ninth place with a 216 (72-72-72) score. With Schmidtke’s top-10 finish, it is now the fifth straight time the Coyotes have had a top-10 individual finish at the Summit League Championships.
