LOCAL SPORTS 8-24

  • The Yankton Bucks finished tied for 5th in the Pierre Invitational at Hillsview Golf Course yesterday afternoon, tallying a 320 (+32) score. Pierre defended their home course and took the team victory, shooting a 282 (-6). Watertown’s Jake Olson led all golfers with a 66 score, while Yankton was led by Dawson Vellek with a 72. Also for Yankton, Evan Ness tallied an 80, Miles Krajewski scored a 81, and Easton Vellek tallied an 83. The Bucks now travel to Huron Friday morning to compete in an invitational at Broadland Creek Golf Course. Tee time set for 10am.
  • Yankton Gazelles Volleyball were swept in their season opener last night at Sioux Falls O’Gorman in three straight sets (25-9, 25-13, 25-6). Yankton was led offensively by Macy Drotzmann with five kills, one ace serve. The Gazelles (0-1) now turn their attention to their first home game of the season, as they host Class A Dakota Valley tomorrow at the Summit Activities Center. First serve set for 7pm.
  • The Yankton Quarterback Club will hold its first meeting of the 2022-2023 school year on this afternoon at JoDean’s in Yankton. The public is invited to attend. There is a cost for the meal. Yankton Bucks Football Coach Brady Muth and Lancers Football John Michaletti are the featured speakers.
  • The Mount Marty Volleyball team began their season on the road last night against Presentation college. The Lancers won the match 3-1 and start the season with a 1-0 record. Mount Marty relied heavily on senior transfer Jadie DeLange from Dakota Wesleyan in the first match of the season. The senior totaled 37 attacks and 12 kills, leading the Lancers in both categories. Mount Marty’s next game will also be against Presentation, this time at home. MMU opens up their first home game of 2022 next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. 
  • The Lancer football team is back in action tomorrow. Mount Marty will travel to Aberdeen to face Presentation tomorrow to start their 2022 campaign at 6 p.m. with this non-conference matchup. As the only two Catholic schools in South Dakota, both programs have agreed that this game will mark the beginning of the Catholic Cup, a yearly tradition which will feature a traveling trophy called The Chalice of the Dakotas.   • The Lancer soccer programs hosted York College for a doubleheader last night at Crane Youngworth Field. The women’s team finished in a  1-1 draw to start their season 0-0-2. The Lancer men defeated York College with a 4-2 score in the nightcap, starting their season with a     1-0-1 record. Next up for both teams is a Monday night matchup with Buena Vista University at home. The Lancer women will open the match at 5 p.m. with the men’s contest immediately following.
