LOCAL SPORTS 2-13-23

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles basketball teams were in Rapid City over the weekend as they faced off with Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens in a pair of double headers.

            On Friday night the Gazelles would fall just short against RC Stevens 50 to 49, while the Bucks would earn a victory over the Raiders 51 to 39.

            On Saturday afternoon, The Gazelles were defeated by RC Central 73 to 35, while the Bucks beat the Cobblers 74 to 53.

            Next up for the Bucks and Gazelles is a home double header tomorrow night against Sioux Falls Christian. Coverage on KYNT and KYNTV will begin at 5:30 PM, with the first game set for 6:00. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

            The Mount Marty Lancers men’s and women’s basketball squads were on the road on Saturday, as they both fell in a pair of GPAC matchups with Northwestern College.

The MMU women fell to the Raiders 78 to 58, while the Lancer men were defeated by Northwestern 90 to 67.

Next up for both teams will be a pair of home games against Doane on Wednesday night. The women will get the night started at 6:00 PM with the men’s season finale to follow. Coverage on KYNT and KYNTV will begin at 5:30, Tehl Tanner will be on the call.

The Mount Marty Lancers baseball team were in Omaha over the weekend as they played four games in two days against Mount Mercy, as the Lancers went (3-1) against the Mustangs.

The Lancers won both matchups on Saturday as they took game one 7 to 1, and shutout Mount Mercy in game two 4 to 0 as the Lancers pitching staff threw a combined no hitter. Mount Marty took the third game of the weekend Sunday afternoon 4 to 0, but would fall to the Mustangs in the series finale 5 to 0.

This was the opening series of MMU’s 2023 season, and also the first, second, and third victories for Josh Teichroew (Ty-Crow) as head coach of the Lancers. Next up for the team will be a trip to Texas on Friday, February 17th, as the Lancers will face Tabor College at 10:00 AM, and Southwestern Assemblies of God at 12:45 PM.

The Mount Marty Lancers indoor track and field team hosted their last meet of the regular season on Saturday.

Lancer athletes set three new school records and achieved forty-six season bests during the Mount Marty Last Chance meet. Two of those records were set by Calli Davis and Elianna Clark. Davis posted a time of 25.95 seconds in the 200m dash, while Clark clocked in at 7.86 seconds in the 60m dash. Both women earned the top spot in their events for their performances.

Next up for the Lancers are the GPAC indoor track and field championships on February 17th and 18th in Seward, Nebraska. Day one of the events begin at 2:00 PM, with day two getting started at 9:00 AM.

It was a big weekend for Yankton Gazelles gymnastics as YHS gymnastics head coach Justin Olson was honored as the 2023 Gymnastics coach of the year by the SD Gymnastics Judges Association, and four team members took part in the individual state competition in Aberdeen on Saturday.

Ava Koller (Collar) earned a top-10 finish at the meet, placing 10th on her floor routine, while also participating in the beam (19th) and vault (23rd). Also representing Yankton, Mackenzie Steinbrecher took part in the vault (17th) and bars (30th), Allie Byrkeland (Burk-land) competed in the vault (29th) and bars (33rd), and Marissa Byrkeland represented Yankton on the beam (39th).

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles wrestling teams hit the mats in two separate events on Saturday, as the Gazelles were in Harrisburg and the Bucks in Huron.

For the Gazelles, Jaclyn Kite picked up a pinfall victory in her opening match, while Navaeh Leonard went undefeated in the meet, picking up three  decision wins on her way to the top spot in her division. As for the Bucks, Shayce Platt (3rd) and Edly Amaro (2nd) would earn top 3 finishes in their divisions.

Next up for Yankton wrestling are a pair of tournaments at Brandon Valley high school later this week. The Gazelles will compete in the ESD meet in Brandon on Thursday night at 5:00 PM, while the Bucks will compete in a regional tournament in Brandon Friday afternoon at 2:00.
