LOCAL SPORTS 9-19-23

The latest high school football media polls in South Dakota were released yesterday, as the Yankton Bucks remain in second following last week’s loss to Pierre.

            The Governors remain atop the polls, followed by Yankton, Tea, Watertown, and Spearfish in that order, with Aberdeen Central outside the top-5 but receiving votes.

            #2 Yankton will travel to #3 Tea on Friday night.

            Mount Marty women’s golf are currently 9th in the Northwest Iowa National Invitational, following yesterday’s opening two rounds.

            The Lancers shot 655 as a team, led by Kelsey Heath who ended day one in 19th, shooting 155 over 36 holes. Keiser University currently leads the team standings, with all 5 golfers in the top-10 individually.

            The Invitational concludes today in Le Mars, Iowa.

            The Great Plains Athletic Conference announced yesterday that Waldorf University would be joining the league, beginning in the 2024-25 season.

            Waldorf is already an affiliate member of the GPAC in men’s and women’s soccer, but will join the conference across the board next year.

Waldorf would become the 13th member of the GPAC, unless Jamestown is granted membership into the NCAA Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

            Yankton Bucks and Gazelles soccer are on the road this afternoon, as they travel to Pierre for a double header with the Governors.

            The Bucks enter the day 3rd in the latest class AA coaches polls, as they play first at 4:00 PM. The Gazelles will close out the double header at 6:00.

            Mount Marty women’s soccer will be in Omaha tomorrow afternoon as they take on the College of St. Mary. First kick is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

            Yankton Gazelles volleyball will travel to Sioux Falls this evening for a matchup with Sioux Falls Lincoln. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

            Mount Marty women’s volleyball will be on the road tomorrow night for their match against Concordia University. First serve from Seward, Nebraska is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

            The Yankton Bucks golf team are in Watertown this morning for an invitational. Today’s event will be held at the Watertown Municipal Cattail Golf Course, with tee time scheduled for 10:00 AM.

            Yankton competitive cheer and dance will compete in an invitational this evening in Huron. Events will take place at the Huron arena, beginning at 5:00 PM.

The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting tomorrow at the River Rock Event Center. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM noon, with first-year South Dakota State head football coach Jimmy Rogers as the featured guest speaker.
