Yankton Man Arrested in Death of Clay County Teen

A Yankton man has been indicted in the fentanyl overdose death of a 15-year-old female from Clay County.

Evan Nelson, 18, was indicted Monday on one count of Distribution of a Controlled Substance to a Minor Resulting in Death, which carries a maximum of life sentence, one count of Distribution of a Controlled Substance to a Minor, and one count of Unauthorized Possession of a Controlled Substance.

The 15-year-old female was found deceased in her bedroom on Dec. 23, 2023.

Nelson was arrested Tuesday and will be prosecuted in Yankton County.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says that the arrest comes after months of investigation by state and local law enforcement.
