Local Sports 6-17-24

Yankton Track and Field athlete Dylan Payer finished 2nd in his heat and 5th overall in the Emerging Elite Mile Run at the Nike Outdoor Nationals on Saturday.

Payer posted a time of 4 minutes, 15.10 seconds. Colby Huntress of Texas won the event with a time of 4 minutes, 13..37 seconds.

Payer, Austin Gobel, Carson Ness, and Connor Slaba also ran in the 4 by 400 meter relay, finishing 14th overall with a time of 3 minutes, 24.68 seconds. 

The foursome finished 2nd in the sprint medley relay earlier in the week, setting a new Yankton High School record at 3 minutes, 31.48 seconds.

Yankton Post 12 Legion Baseball was eliminated from the Dakota Classic by Harrisburg Gold yesterday 8 to 0 in the quarterfinals.

Yankton was held to just one hit in the loss. Harrisburg Gold are the defending Legion State Champions in Class A.

Yankton returns to action tomorrow, hosting Sioux Falls West in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 5:00 PM. Pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 4:30. Bryce Ladwig and Brayden Butler will be on the call.

Yankton Fury Black won the 18u Silver Championship at the Yankton Father’s Day Tournament over the weekend.

Fury Black defeated Diamonds Elite 18u 20 to 10 in the semifinals, before tallying an 8 to 4 win over Kelley’s 18u in the finals. Camryn Koletzky led the way at the plate, tallying three hits and a home run.

Yankton Fury White had their tournament ended in the Gold Bracket semifinals, losing to Swat 16u 9 to 1.

The University of South Dakota track and field program will send three alumni and an assistant coach to the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Representing USD will be Jacy Pulse in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, Chris Nilsen in the men’s pole vault, Emily Grove in the women’s pole vault, and current USD throws assistant coach Maggie Ewen in the women’s shot put.

The events will be held June 21st through 30th in Eugene, Oregon.

South Central League Baseball Results (6-16-24):

  • Wynot defeated Crofton 2 to 1 in 12 innings. Devin Lammers hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the 12th to secure the win.
  • Freeman topped Lesterville 10 to 1. Bailey Sage went 3-for-5 to lead the Black Sox at the plate. Trey Christensen got the win on the mound.
  • Yankton beat Menno 12 to 1.  Will Rauch tallied five hits, two of which were home runs, and five RBIs in the win. Mitch Gullikson struck out eight batters over five innings for the win on the mound.
