Two-Vehicle Collision West of Yankton Results in One Fatality and One With Life-Threating Injuries

A fatal collision occurred seven miles west of Yankton Tuesday morning.

Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet was traveling westbound on SD Highway 50 near mile marker 375.

At that location, a deceased deer was laying in the westbound roadway. The driver hit the deer and lost control of the vehicle and entered the eastbound lane.

At the same time, the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet was approaching from the opposite direction and collided with the first vehicle. Both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch.

The driver of the 2008 Chevrolet, 30, sustained fatal injuries from the crash.

The driver of the 2010 Chevrolet, 52, sustained life-threatening injuries. Both were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
