Elk Point Man Dead in Two-Vehicle Collision North of Sioux City

An Elk Point man died in a two-vehicle crash on I-29 in North Sioux City over the weekend.

Preliminary crash information indicates William R. Chicoine, 69, Elk Point, the driver of a 2020 Ford Escape was traveling northbound on Interstate 29, slowed by congested traffic entering a construction zone.

The driver of a 2013 Lexus, David S. Jones, 57, Sioux Falls, was traveling the same direction at highway speeds, collided with the rear of the Escape, causing it to enter the median and roll over.

The Lexus went across the southbound lane and collided with a fence in the west ditch where it came to rest.

Both drivers were transported to a Sioux City hospital where Chicoine passed away from his injuries. Jones suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
