Over the past few months, the Yankton Community Library and the Yankton City Commission have teamed up to conduct a community library need assessment to see if there would be an interest in a new library in Yankton.
Dr. Julia Hellwege, who is with the Government Research Bureau at the University of South Dakota, and helped conduct the need assessment, presented the results of that survey Tuesday night.
Hellwege says that out of the 1,425 people from Yankton County that participated in the survey, 84% were supportive of a new library.
Library Director, Dana Schmidt, says that the City Commission is considering laying aside some money in the 2025 budget for a concept plan.
Schmidt says that they hope to have more answers on whether or not they will move forward with a concept plan later this fall.
