The Yankton City Commission has voted against a request for an additional $1.7 million in funds to Event Central.
If approved, the funds would have gone towards the recruitment of three more business to Event Central.
City Commissioner, Ben Brunick, who voted against the request, says the city commission already approved two separate sales tax rebates of $500,000 and $1.7 million to Event Central, which were used to land Hobby Lobby, Marshalls, and Five Below.
Brunick says that he was under the impression that the tax rebates that were approved to land those businesses would then recruit other businesses to fill out the mall.
Brunick says that he feels that there has to be a separation between public and private funding.
The commission voted 3-5 against the request with Mayor Mason Schramm not in attendance to vote.
