Local Sports 2/14/25

Yankton Bucks and Gazelles Basketball travel west this afternoon for a Class AA doubleheader against Rapid City Stevens.

Today’s games will be the first half of a back-to-back for both Yankton programs, as they are scheduled to face Rapid City Central tomorrow.

The Gazelles play first at 7:30 PM central with the Bucks to follow. Pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 7:00. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

Despite falling 2.35 points short of qualifying for the team event, six Yankton Gazelles Gymnasts will compete in the individual state competition beginning tomorrow in Watertown.

Qualifying for this year’s competition are Burkely Olson for balance beam and floor, Ellie Drotzmann for balance beam and floor, Marissa Byrkeland for balance beam and vault, Addison Lanphear for vault, Juliet Remington for vault, and Avery Portillo for floor exercise.

Tomorrow’s individual competition begins at 10:30 AM.

Nebraska High School Girls’ Basketball Sub-District Pairings were released on Thursday, with Cedar Catholic and Crofton both earning top seeds.

Cedar Catholic will host Sub-District D1-3 after finishing with a 12-10 record. They will face the winner of Monday’s game between Wausa and Osmond on Tuesday. Bloomfield and Hartington-Newcastle will meet in the other Sub-District Semi-Final Tuesday night.

Crofton is set to host Sub-District C2-4 after a 19-3 regular season. The Warriors will face the winners of Monday’s contest between Norfolk Catholic and Summerland. The other Semi-Final matchup on Tuesday will be between West Holt and Ord.

Sub-District Champions and teams selected as “Wild Cards” will advance to the District Finals on February 28th, with those winners qualifying for the State Tournament.

Yankton Gazelles Wrestling placed 6th as a team at last night’s ESD Girls’ Wrestling meet, led by 120-pound champion Alexis Brenden.

The Gazelles placed three other wrestlers in the top-4 of their respective weight classes. Chloe Caton placed 3rd at 100 pounds, while Jaclyn Kite (138) and Aleya Ruzicka (185) placed 4th.

Next up for Yankton Wrestling in the Region 2 Tournament in Salem on February 20th. 

South Dakota Coyotes Women’s Basketball star Grace Larkins has been named a semifinalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.

Larkins is currently averaging 24.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game, leading the Summit League in all three categories. Larkins also set a new school and Summit League record this season with 47 points in a single game. Larkins also became the first, and still only, D1 Player to score 40+ points in multiple games this season.

Larkins is the only Summit League Athlete to be named a semifinalist this season. Larkins and the Coyotes continue their campaign tomorrow with a game against South Dakota State in Brookings. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

South Dakota Coyotes Men’s Basketball picked up their fourth straight win last night, defeating Kansas City 79-72.

Dre Bullock led the Coyotes with 26 points and 6 steals in the win. Isaac Bruns also eclipsed the 20-point mark, finishing with 21 points on the night.

The Coyotes are home again on Sunday to host in-state rivals South Dakota State at 1:00 PM.

South Dakota State Men’s Basketball defeated the Omaha Mavericks last night, 98-85 in Brookings.

Oscar Cluff secured another double-double in the win, finishing with a game-high in points with 25 and rebounds with 15.

SDSU is on the road on Sunday to take on USD in Vermillion.
