- 73 minutes and 57 seconds, that’s how long it took for the Yankton Bucks to end the defensive struggle, and score a goal on their way to becoming the 2021 Class AA Boys Soccer State Champions over Sioux Falls O’Gorman.
Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls was filled with both Yankton and O’Gorman fans, ready to see a hard fought battle between the two rival schools, and the game lived up to the hype Saturday night.
The Bucks end their historic season with a 15-1-1 record, and Yankton High School’s first sanctioned boy’s soccer state title. The team graduates nine seniors; Sam Herbert, Trace Jensen, William Pavlish, Gavin Fortner, Ethan Yasat, Zach Hebda, Jacob Kirchner, Gage Becker, and Zachery Loest. A celebration reception was held at the Summit Activities Center Sunday afternoon, and received exceptional attendance.
- The Yankton Bucks football squad suffered a tough 35-20 loss in Brookings Friday night. The Bobcats outpaced the Bucks in total yards 376-235, and nearly doubled Yankton in time of possession. The Bucks did find the endzone three times in the game, two from James Stewart on identical wildcat formation runs, and the last a 31-yard touchdown reception by Cody Oswald late in the 4th. Yankton is now 4-4 on the season and prepare to travel to Watertown Thursday night for their regular season finale. It’s been years snice Watertown and Yankton have met on the gridiron, and Bucks Head Coach Brady Muth knows there is a not only a new chapter of a deep tradition on the line, but perhaps a home playoff game next week. - The 11th ranked Yankton Gazelles Volleyball team traveled north to 8th ranked Aberdeen on Saturday, and won their third ESD Conference game of the season in three straight sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-22. The Gazelles are now 11-12 on the year and host Sioux Falls Christian this Friday at 7pm.
- The Mount Marty football team hosted Concordia University in a home GPAC contest. This game took place at the Crane Youngworth field where the Lancers fell to the bulldogs 38-7, moving the Lancer’s overall and GPAC record to 0-7. The Lancers play again this Saturday on the road vs Doane University. Done is 3-4 on the season. Kickoff will be 1pm.
- MMU volleyball played against two separate top 20 opponents over the weekend. The Lancers lost both on the road and fall to 7-15 on the season. The Lancers will play at Dakota State University tomorrow evening at 7:30.
- Mount Marty mens and womens soccer played in a double header vs Dakota Wesleyan University on Saturday. The Tigers defeated the Lancers in both of the matchups. The men fall to 5-6-1 on the season, while the women fall to 1-12.
