LOCAL SPORTS REPORT 2-28-22

  • The Yankton Gazelles (6-14) and Bucks (12-8) finished their regular season schedules out west over the weekend. On Friday, the Gazelles fell to Spearfish Girls 43-40, while the Bucks went on a 93-57 scoring tear that set a new YHS single game scoring record (Previously 92). The majority of the team scored, and Junior Rugby Ryken led the way with 19 points. On Saturday, the Gazelles concluded their regular season with a highly contested 53-52 victory over Sturgis. Macy Drotzmann and Ellie Karolevitz each scored 16 points to lead the Gazelles offensively. The Bucks were able to play their entire bench en-route to a 69-34 victory in their matchup vs Sturgis. Sodak 16 Playoff Pairings will be made official late tonight once the regular season concludes for the Girls/Boys AA Class. The Gazelles locked up the 15th seed, and are confirmed to be traveling to #2 seeded O’Gorman this Friday evening at a time to be determined. The 9th seeded Bucks, as it sits unofficially right now, will travel to 8th seeded Aberdeen Central this Saturday at a time to be determined. The entire SODAK 16 Brackets will be revealed by tomorrow morning.
  • Two local Girls Nebraska High School Basketball teams punched their tickets on Friday to their respective Class’s State Tournament next week. #14 Hartington Cedar Catholic upset #3 Ravenna 55-33 in the Class D1-3 District Finals, and #4 Crofton defeated #13 Superior 53-41 in the Class C2-4 District Final matchup. The tournament pairings will be officially announced soon, with the tournament set for March 7th-12th in Lincoln, Nebraska.
  • The #3 Hartington-Cedar Catholic Trojan Boys Basketball Team looks to make a trip to Class C2 State Tournament in Lincoln as well, but first will have to get past #14 North Central tomorrow evening on their home court for the Class C2-3 District Final matchup.   • Today is the semifinal round of the Division II NSIC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. At 11am, the Minnesota-Duluth men takes on Upper Iowa for their chance to reach the NSIC final, while local Augustana men faces off vs Minnesota State University-Moorehead at 130pm. For the women’s bracket, St. Cloud State University takes on Concordia University-St Paul at 430pm, while Minnesota State University squares up against Minnesota Duluth at 7pm. The NSIC men’s final will take place tomorrow at 4pm, and the women’s at 7pm. with the winners earning an automatic NCAA Division II Tournament berth.
  • Tomorrow is the NAIA GPAC Basketball Tournament Championships for both men and women. For the women, #3 Dakota Wesleyan (25-7, 15-7 GPAC) visits #1 Morningside (27-4, 20-2 GPAC), for a 7 pm tipoff. Both the winner of the GPAC Tournament and the GPAC regular season champion earn a berth to the NAIA Playoffs. In this case, Morningside was the regular season winner, so the other berth will go to the runner up (Dakota Wesleyan) if Morningside is victorious tomorrow. For the men, #5 University of Jamestown (24-8, 12-8 GPAC) takes on host #2 Concordia (24-6, 15-5 GPAC), at 7 pm.
