- South Dakota Legion Baseball’s regular season is winding down, and the Class A Standings are starting to take shape. The #1 team in the Class A Standings is perennial power Rapid City Post 22 (16-2). With the top eight teams hosting the best-of -three state play in series next Friday, Yankton seeks to make the most of their remaining four games and climb from their current 10th position into at least the 8th spot, currently being held by Renner (12-12). Yankton is currently 22-14 overall and 10-9 in Class A play, as they prepare for action tomorrow at Bob Sheldon Field in Brookings, going up against Brookings and Aberdeen in a Class A triangular. - The originally scheduled matchup last night between the Yankton Tappers (8-3) and the Tabor Bluebirds (6-5) was forfeited by Yankton due to an insufficient number of players. Lesterville finished their regular season with a 10-2 record last night after a 9-8 extra innings victory over Menno. Lesterville secured the South-Central League Title after their victory. Yankton will await the pairings of the Class A playoffs, while the rest of the SCL, who belong in Class B, begin district tournament play next Friday.
- This weekend, the Huether Family Aquatic Center Competitive Pool will be in use by the Yankton Swim Team, hosting the State B Swim Meet. Approximately 275 athletes will be on hand to compete. Sonya Wattier with Yankton Parks and Rec ensures the majority of the park will be open to the public this warm weekend. The event begins this morning and runs through Sunday.
- South Dakota Track and Field thrower Jessie Sullivan has been selected as the 2021-22 Summit League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as voted on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives. The Summit League Scholar Athlete of the Year is the most prestigious individual award given by the league each season, recognizing student-athletes for their outstanding academic achievements, athletic achievements, attitude and leadership throughout the year. This marks the fifth time a Coyote has earned the league’s top distinction and the fourth recognition by a member of USD’s track and field program. The Coyotes’ five honors since 2013 is tied for the lead amongst Summit institutions.
- Both the South Dakota State men’s and women’s track and field squads have been honored as 2022 NCAA All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association, with seven Jackrabbits also earning individual distinction as All-Academic Athletes. The SDSU women’s squad posted a 3.598 cumulative team grade-point average through the spring semester, while the Jackrabbit men’s team compiled a 3.256 cumulative team GPA. Teams must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher to qualify for the award.
