- Yankton Gazelles Tennis competed at McKennan Park in Sioux Falls as part of the Sioux Falls O’Gorman triangular yesterday. Yankton dropped their first contest, falling short to Brandon Valley 5-4. Nora Krajewski and Frannie Kouri won their singles matches, and the combinations of Frannie Kouri/Paige Mitzel and Nora Krajewski/Sabrina Krajewski won their doubles competition. The Gazelles also fell to O’Gorman 6-3 in their second match of the triangular, with Nora and Sabrina Krajewski winning in singles, then teaming up for a doubles win. The Gazelles now travel to Hitchcock Park in Mitchell for a triangular vs host Mitchell and Pierre. First serve set for 1pm.
- Yankton Bucks Golf competed in their annual Bucks/Kernel Challenge, also known as the MARCHAND CUP (Marsh-and) at Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton yesterday, but it ended in a DRAW at 12 points per team. The competition follows a three-category template:
Four Ball (Holes 1-6): Mitchell 3.5/Yankton 2.5
Scramble (Holes 7-12): Mitchell 3.5/Yankton 2.5
Singles (Holes 13-18): Yankton 7/Mitchell 5
The Yankton Bucks now travel to Harrisburg’s Spring Creek Country Club for a quadrangular vs host Harrisburg, O’Gorman, and Brandon Valley Friday beginning at 8am.
- The Yankton Gazelles (1-5) fell in three straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-22) to Harrisburg (6-0) on the road last night in Class AA Volleyball action. Yankton was led by Junior Macy Drotzmann with seven kills, two ace serves and five digs. Camille McDermott tallied 15 assists, while Payton Moser contributed 15 digs and two ace serves. Yankton now travels to Class A Beresford Thursday for a 730pm start.
- South Dakota fourth-year junior Elizabeth Juhnke has been named the TicketSmarter Summit League Volleyball Offensive Peak Performer of the Week, the league announced yesterday. Juhnke, honored for the seventh time in her career, averaged 4.64 kills at the Coyote Invitational, where the Coyotes went 2-1 with wins over Northern Kentucky, Missouri, and a loss to No. 4 Louisville in front of a record-breaking crowd. Juhnke contributed a league-high 22 kills in South Dakota’s five-set victory over Missouri on Sunday and earned her 1,000th career dig in that match as well. South Dakota, now 2-1 on the season, heads to El Paso, Texas, for the Borderland Invitational Sep. 2-3.
- The South Dakota women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2022 season by erupting for eight goals on Tuesday night against Dordt University. The Coyotes also kept Dordt off the board for their first shutout of the season as well. With the win, USD moves to 1-3-1 on the year while Dordt falls to 1-3 in 2022. The Coyotes recorded 34 shots with 23 of those on goal. Phoenix took six shots tonight to lead USD followed by five from Rylee Haldeman and four each from Tiannah Moore and Kiah Pieters. South Dakota looks to carry the momentum with them back to the west coast for a couple of weekend contests in Utah. The Coyotes will play Southern Utah on Friday night before traveling to Utah Tech for a Sunday afternoon match.
- The Mount Marty Volleyball team defeated Presentation last night in four sets. The Lancers opened the match with a 28-26 comeback set one victory, then took set two 25-20. In set three, the Presentation Saints took their one and only set of the night 26-24. The Lancers finished the match in set four with a 25-13 score. After the game, head coach Belen Albertos (beh-LIN al-Ber-tos) was excited for this teams future.
MMU is set up for another match this evening as they host York College at the Cimpl Arena at 6 p.m. Mount Marty enters tonight’s match 2-0.
- The Lancer women’s golf team is set to begin their fall season tomorrow, with the start of the Mount Marty Invite. This is a two-day event spanning Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, the Lancers open play at Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton. Then Friday, finish the event at Hillcrest Country Club.
- After sweeping Buena Vista University on Monday, the Mount Marty Soccer programs have begun non-conference play on high notes. The women’s team currently holds a 1-0-2 record while the men’s team has a 2-0-1 record. Next up, both teams will travel to Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln tomorrow for two games. The men will play first with the action beginning at 6 p.m.
