LOCAL SPORTS 1-30-23

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles basketball teams will return to the court tomorrow night as both squads are coming off losses last Friday. The Gazelles will host Aberdeen Central inside the Summit Activities Center, while the Bucks will be in Aberdeen for their matchup with the Golden Eagles. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 5:30 PM. Coverage for the Bucks game can be found on KYNT and KYNTV beginning with the pregame show at 5:00 tomorrow night, Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

The Mount Marty Lancers men’s and women’s basketball teams were off over the weekend, but will return to the hardwood on Wednesday as they will travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on the Briar Cliff Chargers in a GPAC double header. The women are set to tip off at 6:00 PM Wednesday night, with the men to follow. Coverage for the games can be found on KYNT, beginning at 5:30. Tehl Tanner will be on the call.

The Mount Marty Lancers indoor track and field team hosted an invitational on Friday, and it was a great day in the women’s pentathlon for The Mount as 3 of the top 4 spots were claimed by Lancers. MMU’s Ashinee George won the event, scoring 2,854 points. Fellow Lancer Maddison Doren (2,813) was second, while Mount Marty freshman Andrea Sucha (2,576) came home in 4th. The weekend was cut short for the Lancers as the second day of the event was canceled due to inclement weather, as the Lancers will return to action on Friday.

The Yankton Gazelles Gymnastics squad were in Hendricks, Minnesota late last week for the duel against Hendricks Public, as Yankton would win the event 136.2 to 134.45. Next up for th4e Gazelles is the ESD Meet in Pierre on Saturday. Events are set to begin in the state capital at 12:00 PM.

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles wrestling teams will hit the mat tomorrow night as they travel to Vermillion to take on the Tanagers and Dakota Valley in a triangular. Matches are set to begin at 5:00 PM Tuesday evening.

The South Dakota Coyotes men’s and women’s basketball squads took on St. Thomas over the weekend as the two schools would split the matchups. The USD women would fall to St. Thomas in Vermillion, 70 to 64, while the Coyote men picked up an 81 to 67 victory over the Tommies in St. Paul. The Women are off until their meeting with North Dakota State on Thursday, while the men will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma tonight to take on Oral Roberts at 7:00 PM.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits basketball teams squared off with Western Illinois on Saturday in a split double header. The SDSU women would pick up an 81 to 58 home victory to remain undefeated in conference play, while the Jackrabbit men would fall in overtime to the Leathernecks, 81 to 73. The women will retake the court on Thursday against North Dakota, while the SDSU men will be in action tonight in Kansas City to take on the Roos at 7:00 PM.

In national sports news, the Super Bowl matchup is set, as the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs will compete for the Lombardi Trophy. The Eagles earned their spot with a 31 to 7 victory over San Francisco, while the Chiefs punched their ticket with a close 23 to 20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Super Bowl 57 will take place in Glendale, Arizona on February 12th.
