The Mount Marty Lancers women’s basketball team played their final game of the 2022-23 season on Saturday, as they fell to the College of Saint Mary 58-45.
It was the final game for five Lancer seniors as Eve Millar, Aubrey Twedt (T-wee-dt), Alana (a-lay-nuh) Begrland, Kiara Berndt, and Jaiden Hartl suited up in front of their home fans one last time. Millar, 9 points and 7 rebounds, flirted with a double-double, while Twedt was 3rd in scoring for the Lancers with 7. Congratulations to all 5 seniors on their careers
MMU head coach Alan Bertram finishes his first season as head coach with a (7-21) record, as the Lancers more than tripled their win total (2-27) from last season.
The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles return to the hardwood tomorrow night for a pair of matchups with the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors.
The Gazelles will host Washington inside the Summit Activities Center at 7:00 PM, while the Bucks will travel to Sioux Falls to face the Warriors at the same time.
Coverage for the Bucks game will begin at 6:30 Tuesday evening, with tipoff at 7:00 on KYNT and KYNTV. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.
The Mount Marty Lancers indoor track and field team competed in the GPAC conference Championship in Seward, Nebraska over the weekend. The men placed 4th overall, earning the team’s fifth straight top-5 finish, while the women took home their highest conference championship finish in program history of 5th.
Individually, MMU’s men won 4 events with Donovan Breckenridge (200m), Marcus Jnofinn (60m), Mason Schleis (heptathlon), and the 3200m relay team all taking the top spots. Breckenridge (200m/400m) and Jonathan Fuselier (60m hurdles) also posted automatic qualifying times for the NAIA tournament during the events.
For the women, Calli Davis, Elianna Clark, and Ashinee George led the way on the track as Davis took 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in 400m. Clark placed top-5 in both the 60m (3rd) and 200m (5th), while George placed 3rd in the 60m hurdles. Both Davis and Clark were also part of the women’s 1600m relay team that finished 4th. In the field events, Andrea Sucha was the highest MMU finisher, taking home 2nd place in the high jump.
Several MMU athletes have qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 2-4 in Brookings.
Mount Marty Baseball took a trip to Texas over the weekend as they went (3-1) in a pair of double headers against Tabor College and Southwestern Assemblies of God University. The Lancers defeated Tabor in both of their matchups, 5-3 game one, 4-0 game two, and split their matchups with SAoG, losing game one 5-3 and winning game two 5-1.
The Lancers are (6-2) on the year, and will be at home on Saturday for a double header against Valley City State University. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
Mount Marty Softball was in Sioux Center, Iowa over the weekend as they earned 4 victories in as many games. On Friday the Lancers beat Peru State 5-4 and Mayville State 5-1, and on Saturday MMU topped William Penn 5-4 and Dakota State 12-5.
Next up for MMU are games against Saint Ambrose and Mount Mercy this Saturday in Davenport, Iowa. First pitch of game one is set for 9:00 AM.
The South Dakota Coyotes men’s and women’s basketball teams both fell to the Denver Pioneers.
The USD men were defeated 86-68, Mason Archambault led the team with 16 points. The Coyote women lost their matchup with Denver 79-74, Carley Duffney put up 20 points for the yotes, while Grace Larkins had a 12-points 12-rebound double-double.
Next up for both teams are the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Thursday night, the men will play in Vermillion at 7:00 PM, while the women will meet in Tulsa, Oklahoma at 7:00.
The South Dakota State Jackrabbits swept the Omaha Mavericks over the weekend in a pair of Summit League matchups. On the women’s side, Paiton Burckhard scored 18 points to lead SDSU to a 87-54 victory. The Jackrabbit men were victorious in their matchup 91-70, Zeke Mayo led the way with 26 points, while Matthew Mors put up 10-points and 2-steals in the win.
Next up for the Jacks are the Kansas City Roos on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. The women will meet in Kansas City, while the men will play in Brookings.
The District Finals for Nebraska High School Girls Basketball have been set, and several area teams are involved.
In Class C2, top-seeded Crofton will meet Freeman at Columbus Lakeview High School at 7:00 PM
In Class D1, #4 Hartington-Cedar Catholic will host #13 Niobrara-Verdigre at 7:00 PM.
In Class D2, #9 Wynot will face Overton, no time or location has been set at this time.
