The Yankton Gazelles softball team is now (2-1) on the season following a, 11-1 road victory over Rapid City Central yesterday afternoon.
Emma Herboldt led Yankton at the plate, going 3 for 4 on the day, with Payton Moser’s three run home run in the 5th inning also proving vital for the Yankton bats. Grace Behrns got the win on the mound for the Gazelles as she allowed 1 hit and 1 run in the game while striking out ten batters.
The Gazelles have a quick turnaround, as they face Pierre today at 12:00 PM noon in the state capital.
Yankton Gazelles golf opened their season with an 8th place finish yesterday, as they competed in the 12-team Harrisburg Invitational girls’ golf tournament, at Spring Creek Golf Course.
The Gazelles shot 369 as a team, with Elsie Larson shooting 87, and Ellia Homstad shooting 89 to lead the team individually. The Mitchell Kernels took the overall team title with a score of 310.
Next up for the Gazelles is a quadrangular at the Brandon Golf Course on April 18.
Yankton Bucks baseball returns to action this weekend, as they host the Mitchell Kernels in a double header on Sunday. First pitch from Riverside Field is set for 1:00 PM.
Yankton high school track and field no longer has a meet this weekend as Saturday’s Corn Palace Relays have been canceled. Next up for YHS track is now a meet at O’Gorman in Sioux Falls on April 18th.
Yankton Bucks tennis will not compete in Huron this afternoon as their triangular has been canceled. The next event for the Bucks is a duel at Sioux Falls Jefferson on April, 18th.
The Mount Marty Lancers baseball team look to extend their four game win streak this afternoon, as they will travel to Orange City, Iowa for a double header against Northwestern College at 3:00 PM.
The Mount Marty Lancers softball team are set to host Morningside College for a double header this afternoon at Sertoma Park in Yankton.
The Lancers have won 5 of their last 6 GPAC games as they sit 8th in the conference, while the 4th place Mustangs hold an (8-2) record in GPAC play this season. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
Mount Marty men’s and women’s tennis both fell to Concordia University yesterday afternoon, as the men were defeated 5 to 2, while the women lost 1 to 0.
Jeronimo Wagner and Heinrich Lindeque led the way for the MMU men, as they picked up a pair of singles victories to earn the Lancers’ two points.
Next up for MMU tennis is a pair of duels tomorrow at Hastings College.
Mount Marty men’s and women’s track and field squads will return to action this weekend, as two meets are on the schedule for today and tomorrow.
Both the Sioux City Relays in Sioux City, Iowa, and a meet at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska are scheduled to take place today and tomorrow. Day one of both events are scheduled to start at 12:00 PM noon.
During the Sioux City Relays, Yankton high school alumni and YHS Athletics Hall of Famer Betsy Bies Alexanderson will be inducted into the Sioux City Relays hall of fame.
Bies Alexanderson shined at Yankton high school, as she helped capture four straight Class AA state cross country championships and was named a two-time Footlocker XC All-American. Bies Alexanderson was also an eight-time top five finisher at the state track championships in the 1,600 and 3,200, winning a state title as senior in the 3,200 in 2007. She was also part of the Gazelles’ 4×800 relay team that still holds the South Dakota all-time mark of 9 minutes and 1.19 seconds.
Bies Alexanderson will be inducted alongside Ellen (Dougherty) Mangieri, Greg Merrigan, and Bob Saunders. The ceremony will take place at noon on Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The South Dakota Coyotes locked down one of their top athletics coaches yesterday, as USD athletic director Dave Herbster announced that head volleyball coach LeAnne Williamson had signed a five-year contract extension.
Williamson completed her ninth season as head coach last fall, becoming South Dakota’s all-time wins leader as she currently holds a 192-80 career record at the helm. Williamson was also named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) North Region Coach of the Year, after she led USD to a Summit League title, and their fourth NCAA tournament appearance in the last five years.
