Omaha Woman Pleads Not Guilty in Vermillion Stabbing

A woman charged in a stabbing last month in Vermillion has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to all charges.

Chezayia Liggins, 20, is being charged with 2nd degree murder, and two counts of 1st degree manslaughter in relation to the death of Christopher Bartling, 47, which occurred in Vermillion on July 30th.

The charges of manslaughter levied against Liggins carry a maximum penalty of life in prison, while the charge of 2nd degree murder has a mandatory life sentence if convicted.

Liggins trial is scheduled to begin on January 16th at the Clay County Courthouse in Vermillion.
