The Yankton Bucks football team moved to 2 and 0 on the season last Friday night, taking a 42 to 27 victory over Spearfish.
The Bucks took control of the contest early on, as an interception by defensive lineman Derrick Biel on the Spartans’ opening drive gave Yankton the ball, and on the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Lucas Kampshoff found Austin Gobel (Go-bul) for a 35 yard touchdown.
Yankton would never trail Spearfish, but the Spartans did cut the lead to as little as two points, before the Bucks would reestablish control of the contest and pull away for the 42 to 27 win.
The Bucks will be on the road for the first time this week, as they travel to Watertown to meet the Arrows on Friday night.
The Mount Marty Lancers football team won back-to-back games for the first time in program history over the weekend, as they defeated Briar Cliff 40 to 14 on Saturday.
The Lancers held a 24 to 7 lead early in the 4th quarter, when an unlikely interception by nose tackle Dalyn (Day-lynn) Norman gave the Lancers possession in Briar Cliff territory
The Lancers would immediately score on the next play, a 30 yard TD run by Isaiah Thompson, and never look back, securing their first GPAC win of the year, and moving to 2 and 0 in the process.
The Lancers will be on the road for the first time this weekend, as they meet Dordt on Saturday, in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles soccer teams return to Crane-Youngworth Field this afternoon, as they host Brandon Valley in a double header.
The Gazelles will play first at 4:00 PM, with the Bucks kicking off at 6:00. Pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 3:30. Brayden Butler will be on the call.
The Mount Marty women’s soccer team fell to Black Hills State in their season opener on Saturday, losing 5 to 0 to the Yellow Jackets.
The Lancers will host Bethany College for their next game on Friday at Crane-Youngworth Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
The Mount Marty Lancers volleyball team went 3 and 1 in the William-Penn Tournament over the weekend, as they are now 7 and 5 on the year.
The Lancers picked up victories over Tabor College, Clarke University, and Hannibal-LaGrange University, earning 3-set sweeps in each win. The only loss for the Lancers would come to the hosts, William-Penn.
With their success over the weekend, the Lancers have already matched their win total from last season, as they open GPAC play tomorrow night against Doane at Cimpl Arena in Yankton. First serve is set for 7:30 PM.
The Yankton Gazelles volleyball team will be in action this evening as they host Sioux Falls Roosevelt at the Summit Activities Center. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
Mount Mary men’s golf open the Blue River Classic today in Lincoln, Nebraska. Today is day one of the two day event, taking place at Highlands Golf Course.
Mount Marty women’s golf are coming off of a third place finish in last week’s Mount Marty invite, as they look to carry momentum into tomorrow’s opening day of the Siouxland Invite.
Day one of the competition will be held tomorrow at The Ridge in Sioux Center, Iowa, with day two taking place on Thursday at Landsmeer in Orange City, Iowa.
The Hillcrest Pro-Am Invitational wrapped up over the weekend, as Zander Winston claimed the pro title, while Marc Gubbels won the amateur championship.
Winston shot 16-under en route to his second Dakotas Tour win of the season, while Gubbels, a Yankton native, shot an even par to win the amateur title.
The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting tomorrow at the River Rock Event Center in Yankton. This week’s featured guest speaker will be University of South Dakota head football coach Bob Nielsen. The meeting is scheduled to begin at noon on Wednesday
