LOCAL SPORTS 9-27-23

Yankton Bucks and Gazelles soccer ended their regular seasons last night against Sioux Falls Roosevelt, as the Bucks picked up a 6 to 2 win, while the Gazelles fell 2 to 0.

            Christian Pacheco, Anthony Alfonso, and Lance Dannenbring scored 2 goals each in the win, as the Bucks enter the postseason with a 10, 2, and 2 record. The Gazelles end the regular season at 4, 8, and 2.

            The Bucks are in line to play host in the opening round of the state playoffs in early October, while the Gazelles are slated to be on the road in round one if the standings remain the same. Playoff seeding and matchups will be finalized at the conclusion of the regular season on September 30th.

            Yankton Gazelles tennis finished 5th in the ESD conference meet, led by a pair of top flight titles in singles and doubles.

            Nora Krajewski (Kra-ski) claimed the flight one singles title for the Gazelles, while also being part of the flight one doubles championship duo alongside Sabrina Krajewski. Sabrina Krajewski also took a 3rd place finish in singles flight two, with Kara Koerner taking fourth in singles flight five.

            Yankton now turns their attention to the state tournament, taking place October 5th and 6th in Sioux Falls.

            Yankton Gazelles volleyball fell in three sets to Sioux Falls Jefferson last night, as the Cavaliers remain unbeaten this year.

            Camille McDermott posted 15 assists to lead the team, while Macy Drotzmann tallied the most kills for Yankton with 5 in the match.

            The Gazelles are off for the next week, as they’ll be on the road on Monday, October 2nd against Sioux Falls Christian.

            Mount Marty men’s and women’s golf wrapped up a two-day event in Hastings, Nebraska yesterday, with both teams finishing 6th in their divisions.

            The Lancers posted three top-10 individual finishes during the event, as Wout Kerkhofs, tied for 6th and Ted Bengston, tied for 10th for the men, while Kelsey Heath led the women’s team as she took home a 5th place finish.

            Mount Marty women’s golf will be in action again on October 4th, while the men are off until October 9th.

            Mount Marty men’s and women’s soccer will be at home this evening, as they host Northwestern College for a double header. Game one is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM, with game two beginning at 7:15.

            Mount Marty volleyball will be on the road tonight, as they take on Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa. First serve is set for 7:30 PM.

            Yankton Bucks and Gazelles cross country will be in action tomorrow afternoon, as they travel to South Sioux City for a meet. Varsity girls will run at 4:00 PM, with varsity boys scheduled to run at 4:30.

The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting at noon today at the River Rock Event Center in Yankton. This week’s featured guest speaker will be Augustana head football coach Jerry Olszewski.
