LOCAL SPORTS 9-28-23

The Yankton Bucks football team will host Brookings tomorrow night for their homecoming game, at Crane-Youngworth Field.

            The Bucks enter the contest 4 and 1, and are 2nd in the class 11-AA seed point standings, as well as in both the media and coaches polls.

            Kickoff between the Bucks and Bobcats is scheduled for 7:00 PM tomorrow night, pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 6:00. Bryce Ladwig and Josh Boelter will be on the call.

            Yankton High School will induct four new members into their Athletics Hall of Fame this evening, in an event held in the YHS commons. This years inductees are:

  • Justin Frick (Class of 2003):
    • Frick was a three sport athlete at YHS, as a member of the football, wrestling and track & field teams. Frick was All-State in football his senior season, was a member of the Bucks 2002 football state title team, helped the Bucks secure a 2003 ESD wrestling title, and was the 2003 state champion in the shot put.
  • Jenny Gudahl (Class of 1994)
    • Gudahl was a three sport athlete, and was a member of the first Gazelles volleyball team in school history. As a golfer she was a 4-time state qualifier, finishing runner-up her senior season. As a member of the Gazelles basketball team Gudahl earned 2nd-team All-State honors her senior year.
  • Dan Specht (Class of 1986):
    • Specht was a two-sport athlete in wrestling and football. As a wrestler he captured the 145 pound state title in 1986 as part of the Bucks only wrestling team to claim a state title. Specht was also a member of the Bucks 1984 football state championship team.
  • Andrea Walsh (Class of 2006):
    • Walsh was a two-sport athlete on the hardwood for Yankton, playing both basketball and volleyball for the Gazelles. Walsh was a 4-time All-ESD selection during her basketball career, and was a member of the Gazelles 2005 volleyball state title team.

            Mount Marty volleyball fell in 4-sets last night, as they were on the road against Morningside.

            Julia Weber led the Lancers in kills on the evening with 10, while adding 15 digs and 3 blocks.

            The Lancers are 9 and 11 on the year following the loss, as they travel to Sioux Center, Iowa tomorrow night for a match with Dordt at 7:30 PM.

Mount Marty men’s and women’s soccer both fell last night in their double header against Northwestern, as the men lost 6 to 0, while the women were defeated 2 to 0.

            Both Lancer teams are off for a week, as their next matches are scheduled for next Wednesday against Dordt.

            Yankton Bucks and Gazelles cross country will be in action today, as they travel to South Sioux City for a meet. Varsity girls will run at 4:00 PM, with varsity boys scheduled to run at 4:30.

            South Dakota Coyotes senior linebacker Brock Mogensen was announced yesterday as one of 39 semi-finalists who are representing the FCS for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy.

            The William V. Campbell Trophy is college football’s premier scholar-athlete award. Candidates for the award must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2, have outstanding football ability, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

The National Football Foundation will announce 12-14 finalists for the award on October 25th, with each finalist receiving an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. Mogensen joins Jack Cochrane, Isaac Armstead, and Chris Streveler as Coyotes who have been named semi-finalists for the award.
