Mount Marty Men’s Basketball was defeated by the Morningside Mustangs on Saturday, 75 to 62.
The Lancers, now 5 and 16 on the year, were led by Rugby Ryken who recorded a game-high 19 points and 4 assists. Cole Bowen led the Lancers in rebounds with 7.
The Lancers are back home on Wednesday, hosting Doane University inside Cimpl Arena.
Mount Marty Women’s Basketball fell in GPAC play on Saturday, as they were defeated by Morningside 84 to 69.
The Lancers, now 5 and 17 on the year, had three players score double figures, led by 17 points from Isabelle Ellwein. Kaela Martinez and Kaity Hove each added 10 points.
The Lancers play their fourth straight home game on Wednesday, as they host Doane University.
Yankton Bucks Basketball was on the road last Friday night, as they were defeated by the Pierre Governors, 61 to 34.
Landon Potts led Yankton with 12 points and 4 assists in the loss. Tucker Gilmore followed with 8 points and 4 assists of his own. Recent Mount Marty commit Tyan Buus (Bus) finished with 10 points for the Govs.
Next up for the Bucks is a home matchup with Rapid City Stevens on February 9th.
Yankton Gazelles Gymnastics have had 6 different athletes qualify for individual competition following the conclusion of their regular season over the weekend.
Ava Koller (Collar) leads the way, qualifying for the beam, bars, floor, vault, and all-around competitions. Burkely Olson qualified for vault, bars, and floor. Emma Gobel and Ellie Drotzmann qualified for bars, and Avery Portillo qualified for floor.
The Gazelles, who qualified for the team competition following the ESD Conference Meet, will compete in the state tournament in Pierre, beginning on Friday, February 9th.
Yankton Bucks Wrestling finished 12th at their home invite over the weekend, in an event that included 5 of the top 8 teams in the state.
Dylan Sloan and Shayce Platt led the Bucks with 4th-place finishes at 138 and 150 respectively. Devon Coke took 5th at 120, while Bode Thurman, 144, and Chase Howe, 157, each placed 8th in their classes.
Next up for the Bucks is the Region 2A Championships on February 16th.
Yankton Gazelles Wrestling took 7th at their home invite on Saturday, scoring 22 points with just 2 wrestlers competing in the event.
Jaclyn Kyte took 2nd at 138 pounds, with her lone loss coming to Bon Homme-Scotland-Avon’s Peyton Hellman. Hellman currently ranked #12 in the country according to FloWrestling. Monica Massey ended the day 4th at 114 pounds.
Next up for the Gazelles is the ESD Conference Championships on Thursday in Harrisburg.
Mount Marty Softball opened their 2024 campaign yesterday, splitting a pair of games against Culver-Stockton.
The Lancers took game one 13 to 5. Autumn Porter and Abby Johnson each went 3 for 4 at the plate, with Porter tallying 5 RBIs in the win.
MMU were edged out in game two, 4 to 3. The Lancers were held to 7 hits in the loss, with Lilinoe Nihi, Elisabeth McGill, and Reese Peterson each recording an RBI.
Next up for the Lancers is a pair of games with Minnesota-Crookston on February 10th.
Mount Marty Track and Field competed in the Frank Sevigne Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska over the weekend, with a pair of athletes earning top-10 finishes in their events.
Edwin Nyamutswa was the highest finisher for the Lancers, as he took home 5th in the 200-meter run, finishing in 21.56 seconds. Tianna Bumbaca-Kuehl was the highest finisher for the MMU women, claiming 9th in the 600-meter run.
Next up for the Lancers is the SDSU Indoor Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Yankton’s Miles Krajewski (Kra-ski) was honored on Friday, as he was voted Pan-American para-badminton player of the year following a fan vote.
Krajewski, a Yankton High School Senior, currently ranks in the top 10 internationally in para-badminton and is a 2024 Paralympic hopeful. Krajewski will be competing in Thailand later this month, as part of the Para-Badminton World Championships.
South Dakota and South Dakota State Men’s Basketball battled yesterday, as the Jackrabbits held off the Coyotes for a 70 to 67 home win.
The Jackrabbits, now 13 and 11 on the year, had four different players score 10+ points, led by a 16-point 11-rebound double-double from William Kyle III.
The Coyotes were led by Kaleb Stewart in the loss, as he tallied a game-high 27 points. Lahat Thioune (La-hot Toon) recorded a double-double as well with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Next up for USD is a home game against Denver on Thursday, while SDSU is off until they host Oral Roberts on Saturday.
South Dakota and South Dakota State squared off on Saturday, as the Jackrabbits remained undefeated in conference play with a 70 to 55 win.
SDSU had three players in double figures, as Brooklyn Meyer led the way with 22 points, followed by Paige Meyer and Ellie Colbeck with 15 apiece.
Natalie Mazurek led USD on the night, scoring 17 points, and adding 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Grace Larkins followed with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists of her own.
Next up for USD is a road matchup with Denver on Thursday, while SDSU is off until Saturday when they take on Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
