A fatal shooting that occurred in Vermillion earlier this week has been ruled self defense.
According to Vermillion Police Chief Crystal Brady, after an investigation, Chase Kinchen, 38, from Vermillion, had unlawfully and forcefully entered the residence while armed with a handgun in violation of a protection order prohibiting him from contact with the resident or from entering a zone of 500 feet surrounding the home.
Brady says Kinchen threatened the resident of the home and a guest. The guest retreated to an attached garage but was pursued by Kinchen who fired his weapon at the guest.
The other person obtained a handgun from a vehicle in the garage and returned fire. Kinchen was shot and died of his injuries.
Brady says that the identity of the third party in the residence is protected under Marsy’s law, they will not face any charges, and their name will not be released.
