Yankton Thrive hosted a discussion on IM 28 Thursday.
The measure, if passed, would repeal the state’s existing tax on items sold for human consumption.
Both Rick Weiland, who is the who is the measure’s sponsor, and Nathan Sanderson, who is the executive director of the South Dakota Retailers Association, spoke at the event.
Weiland says that he believes the food tax is repressive.
Sanderson says that he is opposed to IM 28 because he believes there would be cuts in other departments.
IM 28 will be on the ballot in November.
